Albon says ‘I’ve got three races to show what I’ve got’ as he awaits Red Bull 2021 decision

Alex Albon isn’t interested in a Plan B. The Thai driver says he is fully focused on Plan A, which is retaining his seat at Red Bull for 2021, and that means delivering in the final three races.

The Thai driver led a Grand Prix lap for the first time in Turkey, but a spin cost him a stronger result as he crossed the line seventh, one place behind Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen.

Red Bull have yet to announce who will partner Verstappen next season, and while Sergio Perez has been linked with a move to the team, it is believed they are giving Albon more time to prove he should stay.

“It was a good weekend on my side, it was a step forward in terms of pace and we did a few things on my car which felt better,” said Albon of his performance at Istanbul Park.

“At the end of the day, there’s still three races to show what I’ve got. I want to have a good few races ahead of me.”

With rising F2 star Yuki Tsunoda likely to get the AlphaTauri seat alongside Pierre Gasly next year, Albon’s chances of staying in F1 would be all but over – but he insists he is not looking at a back-up plan.

“The focus is these three races, there’s not really any other thought to it,” he said. “Most people have a plan B, but my plan is plan A, that’s staying in the team. I’m focused on that, that’s my goal. As I said focusing on these races.”

Albon ended a run of three races without a point with seventh in Turkey to move onto 70 points, four adrift of Lando Norris in eighth in the drivers’ championship.
