BEYOND THE GRID: Colton Herta on doing the work to make it to F1

Formula 1 has always been a dream for American driver Colton Herta. Walking away from IndyCar to race in Formula 2 was a gamble.

His reward, should he prove himself in this highly competitive category, could be an F1 drive with Cadillac in the future, Herta already taking up duties as the team's Test Driver.

Cadillac currently have Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas in their ranks, with Zhou Guanyu as their official Reserve Driver.

Speaking on the day he had a seat-fit for Cadillac’s F1 car, Herta tells Beyond the Grid's Tom Clarkson about growing up at race tracks with his father, IndyCar legend Bryan Herta, his love of motorsport and F1 deals that never happened with Sauber and Red Bull’s junior team.

Herta also remembers leaving the US as a teenager to race in Europe, where he was team mates with a young Lando Norris in junior categories, and he looks forward to making his F1 practice session debut for Cadillac later this season.

And he discusses how, perhaps in the future, Cadillac might look to put an American driver in their team - and what he needs to do to ensure he is ready to take any opportunity that arises.
