F2: Drugovich dominates to win Saudi Arabia Feature Race from pole

Felipe Drugovich continued his resurgence in Formula 2 with MP Motorsport, winning for the first time since November 2020 to jump to the top of the drivers’ championship, as Liam Lawson and Theo Pourchaire both retired in the Feature Race.

Trident’s Richard Verschoor was unable to truly challenge Drugovich, finishing in P2 for his second rostrum in as many rounds. Despite starting from 14th, Red Bull junior Jehan Daruvala claimed the final podium trophy with a charge through the field.

Retiring within a lap of each other, Sauber junior Pourchaire had to pull his car into the pits with a problem, before Red Bull academy driver Lawson came to a stop at the exit of the pitlane, with his front left wheel not fully fitted.

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Jake Hughes got over his Sprint Race disqualification by making it up to fourth from ninth, ahead of Hitech Grand Prix’s Marcus Armstrong.

Making the alternate strategy work, Red Bull backed Norwegian Dennis Hauger clinched his best result to date in F2, climbing from 10th to sixth to finish ahead of DAMS pairing Ayumu Iwasa and Roy Nissany.

Also utilising the alternate strategy, Alpine prodigy Jack Doohan recovered from last on the grid to take ninth, ahead of Hitech’s Juri Vips, who claimed the final points place.

Drugovich only took four podiums during a disappointing 2021 campaign with Virtuosi, but the Brazilian now leads Lawson in the drivers’ standings – with three weeks to go until F2 returns at Imola on April 22-24.
