F3: Ferrari junior Leclerc takes Race 1 win from Sargeant at Zandvoort
Ferrari junior Arthur Leclerc sustained race-long pressure from 2020 title-challenger Logan Sargeant to clinch his second Formula 3 win with a dogged display in Race 1 at Zandvoort.
Starting from second and third, Sargeant and Leclerc swung either side of reverse polesitter Amaury Cordeel when the lights went out, going wheel-to-wheel into Turn 1. Sargeant momentarily had the lead, but it was Leclerc who scampered ahead at the second corner, as Cordeel was taken out of contention by a collision with Alex Smolyar.
Sargeant acted as a shadow to Leclerc for the remainder of the race but was unable to find a route past the PREMA driver on his first racing appearance at the Dutch circuit.
Red Bull juniors Ayumu Iwasa and Jak Crawford secured third and fourth for Hitech Grand Prix, with the latter surviving a last-lap challenge from Alpine Academy driver Caio Collet, who settled for fifth.
The championship’s top two finished alongside each other in sixth and seventh to set up a thrilling Race 2 battle, with Jack Doohan rising three places from ninth and Dennis Hauger clambering his way through from 12th.
Alpine’s Victor Martins claimed his fourth successive points finish, taking eighth, ahead of Mercedes protege Frederik Vesti and Olli Caldwell.
Finishing 12th, Carlin Buzz Racing’s Ido Cohen will start ahead of Trident’s Clement Novalak on the front row of Race 2’s reverse grid at 1755 local time.
Race 3 takes place on Sunday at 1045 local time, the grid set by Friday’s qualifying session.
