F3: Marti sails to lights-to-flag Monaco Sprint Race victory

Josep Maria Marti was untouchable out on track in the Monaco Formula 3 Sprint Race, cruising to his second win of the season by more than eight seconds. After starting on reverse grid pole, the Campos Racing driver left the pack behind and drove off into the distance.
Trident’s Leonardo Fornaroli overcame pressure throughout to secure his maiden F3 podium in second, whilst ART Grand Prix’s Gregoire Saucy got the job done with a brave move around the outside of Turn 1 to round out the podium.

The story of the race was defined in the opening phase, after contact sent MP Motorsport’s Jonny Edgar into the barriers at Sainte Devote, whilst his team mate Mari Boya also suffered damage. Nailing a perfect restart on Lap 5, Marti steadily built his advantage up lap-by-lap and continued breezing his way to victory on the streets of Monte Carlo.
Franco Colapinto wasted no time on the restart, with a daring dive late on the brakes into the Turn 6 hairpin allowing the Williams junior to get the jump on Taylor Barnard for fourth. Nevertheless, the Jenzer Motorsport driver still brought home his best finish so far in fifth, ahead of championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto.
Hitech Pulse-Eight duo Sebastian Montoya and Luke Browning had to settle for seventh and eighth, ahead of Caio Collet. Despite having Gabriele Mini on his tail throughout, PREMA Racing’s Paul Aron didn’t give the Alpine junior an opportunity to pounce and kept hold of the final points-paying position.
Mini will be hungry for more when he lines up on pole for Sunday’s Feature Race. The 27 laps of action begin at 0800 local time.
