Max Verstappen managed to emerge unscathed from a chaotic Qatar Grand Prix, storming to victory ahead of Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri in a remarkably eventful race.
The Red Bull driver quickly bounced back from his one-place grid penalty as he took the lead from George Russell on the opening lap. He would then go on to control the field and avoid the series of escalating incidents throughout the 57 laps.
Penalties were dealt out to a large number of drivers for a false start, causing collisions, and speeding in the pitlane, but the most impactful was handed to Lando Norris at a time when McLaren were hoping to wrap up the constructors’ title.
The Briton failed to slow under yellow flags that were waved when Alex Albon’s rogue wing mirror fell off on the main straight, and was subsequently handed a 10-second stop/go penalty – the first of its kind since the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.
He recovered to secure two points with the fastest lap in P10, finishing behind Kevin Magnussen and Zhou Guanyu, who scored Kick Sauber’s first points of the 2024 season.
