Opmeer and Red Bull crowned champions during F1 Sim Racing World Championship finale in Abu Dhabi

Jarno Opmeer has been crowned F1 Sim Racing Drivers’ World Champion for a record third time following Thursday night’s Abu Dhabi season finale, with his Oracle Red Bull Sim Racing outfit also taking the Teams’ title.
Opmeer approached the 12th and final round of the campaign at a virtual Yas Marina Circuit sitting atop the standings on 148 points, followed by KICK F1 Sim Racing Team’s Thomas Ronhaar on 127 and Williams Esports’ Ismael Fahssi on 125.
Ronhaar found himself with a brilliant chance of overturning that points deficit heading into the race, having charged to pole position during Qualifying while Opmeer dramatically fell at the Q2 hurdle.
However, in an action-packed affair, which included Opmeer and Ronhaar at one stage making contact, it was the Dutchman who emerged with the championship via a strong recovery to seventh place.
Ronhaar had earlier been penalised for “rough driving” and eventually wound up at the back of the pack, with Fahssi unable to pull off the significant points swing he required by coming home fifth.
The race victory went to Aston Martin Aramco F1 Esports Team rookie Otis Lawrence, with McLaren Shadow driver Alfie Butcher and Scuderia Ferrari HP Esports Team’s Bari Broumand completing the podium.
