ROAD TO F1: Ilott wins F2 Sprint Race as Ticktum is disqualified at Monza

Ferrari junior Callum Ilott has re-taken the lead in the Formula 2 drivers’ championship with his third victory of the season, after Dan Ticktum - who crossed the line in first place - was disqualified and stripped of first place, in the Monza Sprint, promoting Ilott from second.

Ticktum looked to have put on a masterclass in Monza, dragging his DAMS machine ahead of reverse grid polesitter Louis Deletraz when the lights went out. The Williams Academy driver’s win never looked in doubt during the race, as he crossed the line with a comfortable 4.6s gap on Ilott.

However, the DAMS driver failed to make it to Parc Ferme, slowing to a stop on the gravel trap with a lack of fuel. Ticktum was subsequently disqualified, as DAMS were unable to provide a sufficient fuel sample from his car, as is required by the regulations.

This gifted Ilott the win from second, after he passed Deletraz during the race. He’d started day tied on points with Shwartzman in the race for the title, and three ahead of Feature Race winner Mick Schumacher, but with the Russian sixth, and the German in fourth, he has a six-point advantage over Schumacher, Shwarztman now third in the standings.

Schumacher enjoyed a stellar race of his own, rising from eighth to fourth, before managing out the end of the race with a heavily vibrating left-tyre. The German heads into Round Nine at Mugello as the man in form, with four podiums and a win from the last three rounds.
