ROAD TO F1: Pourchaire doubles up by dominating thrilling first F3 race in Hungary

Formula 3’s youngest-ever race winner, Theo Pourchaire, has also become the 2020 season’s first double victor by taking the spoils in Race 1 in Round 3 at the Hungaroring.

There was a sense of deja-vu in the circumstances as last time out, in Race 2 of Round 2 at the Red Bull Ring, the 16-year-old was gifted the lead in the dying laps when Liam Lawson and Jake Hughes crashed from first and second.

This time around, he saw polesitter Alex Smolyar and Logan Sargeant collide at the start of the race to hand him the lead once again, but with more than 20 laps to go, and championship leader Oscar Piastri directly behind him, he needed nerves of steel to hold on.

He responded emphatically, displaying a maturity well above of his 16 years of age to pull away at a rate of half-a-second per lap, and finish with a mega margin of 11.9s over the Renault junior.

Further down the order, David Beckmann put his difficult qualifying behind him to climb four places to tenth, for reverse grid pole in Race 2 on Sunday, at 0945 local time.
