The quest to maximise aerodynamic outwash around the front tyres – to direct the airflow away from the underfloor and floor edges around the front of the car, in order to increase the underfloor performance – is very much related to the problem suffered by Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes at Silverstone.
It will be recalled that Antonelli lost the chance of a British Grand Prix victory when his brake shield became detached, interfering with the steering and aerodynamics and forcing him into the pits.
